André Romão
André Romão’s artistic practice emerges from the interplay of diverse materials, temporalities, and identities that elude any fixed direction, crossing paths within a field of sensitive tensions. Through sculpture and poetry, his works take on a fluid quality, undergoing enigmatic metamorphoses and outlining a universe where formerly rigid boundaries between human and animal, natural and artificial, organic and inorganic, dissolve into distributed affects. By constructing an imaginary that rejects limits, Romão’s work persists in the fantasy of escape and quiet transgression, where different bodies unfold and contaminate one another in a gesture of continuous symbolic reinvention.
André Romão was born in Lisbon in 1984, where he lives. His work has been featured in institutions such as Serralves Museum (Porto), Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisbon), Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève, Liverpool Biennial 2021, MAAT (Lisbon), Berardo Museum (Lisbon), Futura (Prague), The Green Parrot (Barcelona), MACRO (Rome), Astrup Fearnley Museet (Oslo), CAPC (Bordeaux), Spike Island (Bristol), Kunsthalle Lissabon, among others.
He was a resident artist in Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2010), MACRO, Rome (2014), and Gasworks, London (2020), among others. From September to December 2026, he is in residence at LUMA Arles with the support of the Gulbenkian Foundation – Delegation in France.
