On Shunga

Pedro Cera is pleased to present the second solo exhibition of the German artist Tobias Rehberger at the gallery.
Under the title "On Shunga," Tobias Rehberger has covered a significant portion of the gallery's exhibition space walls with paper featuring images from the Japanese artistic genre known as shunga. Shunga refers to explicit and sexual drawings created in Japan between the 17th and early 20th centuries, depicting various couples of different genders and social status engaged in sexual activities.
In line with his approach in many of his interventions, this paper incorporates elements of everyday life and strong local and cultural traditions, such as tiles. This, in turn, creates an "optical illusion" by recreating the shapes and volumes formed by the tiles as the background for these images.
This intervention is complemented by 10 cubic-shaped vases placed at different points within the two gallery rooms. Again, thanks to the reproduction of the "tile effect" and the exact alignment of the drawing that serves as the backdrop, these ten elements blend into the overall view of the exhibition.
